Frequently Asked Questions

General

We are aiming for a location that is 2-3 miles from the intersection of Skyline Boulevard (CA-35) and Hickey Boulevard in North San Mateo County, California.

We are aiming to open in August 2026, if we receive charter authorization.

If there is enough interest for a particular grade, we plan to offer enrollment. Please fill out our Interest Form so we can include you in our plans.

A charter school is a public tuition-free school that does not require an interdistrict transfer approval for a student to attend. Like other public schools, it is required to follow state standards and have teachers with credential authorizations, but has flexibility on curriculum.

Students

There is no tuition to attend; Oceanlight is a proposed charter school. All charter schools are public tuition-free schools.

We plan to have an extended care program (fees apply). Extended care programs are another way for the students to build community and develop relationships with each other outside of the school day.

We will only hold a lottery if there are more enrollment applications than available spaces for a particular grade. Once all seats are filled, we will continue to fill a waitlist for that grade.

If there are more applications than available spaces, we will hold a random and fair lottery, and siblings will be among those who will have priority in the lottery. Details of our admission procedures are outlined in our Charter Petition in Element M.

Charter Petition

As a resident of San Mateo County, signing the “meaningful intent to enroll” form (aka Oceanlight School Charter Petition) does not legally commit you to enrolling your student(s). It also doesn’t guarantee enrollment, but does give you priority consideration in the admissions process.

You can write to the San Mateo County Board of Education Trustees and attend the public hearings. Sign up for updates to be informed about the relevant dates.

Please fill it out today. While the charter petition for approval review can’t be changed, we plan to use the data in advocating for Oceanlight with the authorizing agency.

You can write a Letter of Support which will accompany our petition when we submit it to the authorizing agency.
